Pre-Christmas cleaning Tips – STRES FREE SEASON

Christmas time is the busiest time of year with present shopping, cooking and all of the parties. Some people can find it overwhelming, especially if you have family coming to stay for the holidays or even just a lunch.

Make it an extra merry Christmas this year with cleaning hacks that’ll save your sanity long after the holidays are over.

Christmas is almost here! If you’re hosting a party or celebration at home, find out how to prepare & get your home clean & tidy beforehand.

PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO THE ROOMS PEOPLE WILL SPEND MOST TIME IN

There’s no point spending your precious hours labouring over rooms that people will only sleep in. Focus most on areas like the lounge or dining room. And of course, get that kitchen sparkling so you can have a relatively stress free day when it comes to cooking.

GET YOUR OVEN CLEANED!

Nobody likes to open the oven on Christmas day and realise that it’s full of grease and needs a good scrub – get ahead of the Christmas day panic and clean your oven beforehand.

THAT GOES FOR COOKING EQUIPMENT TOO

You’re not going to be pleased if you’ve only got greasy baking trays to use in your new sparkly oven, so make a note to prepare all the bakeware you’ll need for Christmas day. And glassware too! Even if it means it all being out on the dining room table beforehand, it’s worth making sure you’ve got enough of everything (we always forget the gravy boat!) and that it’s all in tip-top shape.

STOCK UP ON CHRISTMAS ROLL

Christmas is prime time for spillages and sticky fingers making a mess everywhere, so to avoid a big clean up post-Christmas, strategically place kitchen roll around your home, so there’s no excuse! People can soak up any spilt bevvies, plus catch any crumbs from those late night mince pies!

POLISH SILVERWARE FOR CHRISTMAS DINNER

Don’t spoil a delicious Christmas dinner with tarnished silverware. Make your tines shinier than the star on top of your Christmas tree with a baking soda and salt bath.

CLEAN UP EGGNOG STAINS

Eggnog may be the official holiday drink of Christmas, but it’s not as festive if you spill some on your clothes. To remove, make sure you have some enzyme-cleaning liquid laundry detergent on hand.

USE A CHRISTMAS TRASH BOX

Why use a large garbage bag to collect Christmas morning mess when you can try this festive alternative from bloggers Chica and Jo? Plus, a Christmas trash box can serve double duty as a great spot to display unopened gifts if there’s no room left under the tree.

CIRCULATE AIR AROUND YOUR HOME – OPEN WINDOWS !

The house has an odd stale smell of food and alcohol, open those windows and aerate the place. It also helps if you have any trace of a hangover…

MUCKY CLOTHES

This isn’t going to be a pretty job, take off the heels, put on some marigolds and perhaps some old clothes – maybe even an apron

RECYCLING

After any party there will be a lot of bottles, cans and cardboard left over. Make sure you remove this stuff first; it will make your job feel far smaller! Tip: carry a bucket around and pour any remaining liquids in glasses/bottles/cans into the bucket so that they didn’t get knocked over and cause a stain!

IF YOU HAVE A DISHWASHER , NOW IS A GREAT TIME TO USE IT !

All those plates, all those pots and pans – now your dishwasher will pay for itself! Carefully slot them all in using tetris skills and set the machine to work – nearly finished all the work now!

WIPE DOWN ALL THE TOPS

Final task – mop the floors with hot water to remove any tricky stains, then spray some multipurpose cleaner onto the worktops and give them a wipe down

PLAN IN ADVANCE

If you’re lucky enough to be hosting the whole family this year, get prepared! Even if you have to create a spread sheet to track your cooking, arrival times of distant relatives, or washing up rota, it will help minimise stress on the day (and hopefully less arguments over the traditional game of Monopoly!).

PUT YOUR FEET UP !

You’ve done a great job, put on a Christmas film, have a cup of tea and some chocolate!
